In order to facilitate multirole multi-mode operation, this must impose the minimum of constraints on the parameters that can be defined in so~are, while still oflering performance which is at least as good as today’s application-specljic radios. l%is paper outlines some of the areas of research being carried out at the University of Bristol, ji.mded by DERA, in an attempt to improve the~exibility andperformance of the analogue Wfiont-end of a multi-role radio. v interest in the concept of a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) [1]. Such a radio would have all its main operating parameters defined in software rather than hardware and would therefore be extremely flexible, with obvious benefits in both military and commercial applications. For the military, such technology would provide a method of combining a number of radios into one unit, providing savings in terms of size, weight, cost and logistics support. Its software programmability would also have benefits in terms of upgradability and inter-operation between nations, leading to shorter procurement cycles and an ability to respond more rapidly to advances in technology .———————-—, I Input I I 1.6-2690 MHz I Wanted -113 to +7 dBm I I Interferww I I O dBm (manpack) ~ +42dBm (vehicle) I ——-—————-—— ~ _——--— —-&:~f~u~ -6dB ; --—L .—-—-— —--—-~——_—— I Image rajactiom 100 dB I IF reJec40n 90 dB -—-—— -—-I Spurious rapctiort 73 dB I r -----——-—-— —-— I 31P mferrad to antenna I Ad]aoant channel rejection 100dB ~ I -2dBm(manpack) ~ ~ 1 Vatiabla BW 0.2-1728 kHz I SFDR 109dB (manpack) ,–__––– _——-— — . Proceedings of the 5th Progress Symposium on Embedded Systems
The number of wireless communication links is witnessing tremendous growth and new standards are being introduced at high pace. However, circuit development is costly and time consuming due to mask costs and design iterations. Moreover, with ever-increasing radio standard complexity, these costs are increasing. This pleads for a Software Defined Radio approach, in which one piece of flexible ra...
متن کاملMulti-Band Multi-Standard CMOS Receiver Front-Ends for 4G Mobile Applications
The development of the transistor and its continuous down-scaling has allowed during the last decades the appearance of cheap wireless communication systems targeting consumer products. The complexity of these systems has increased dramatically during the last years, mainly fueled by both the Moore law and improvements in communication theory. Originally, the radio transceivers were composed of...
متن کاملTunable RF Front-Ends and Robust Sensing Algorithms for Cognitive Radio Receivers
In this chapter, the concepts of Cognitive Radio (CR) and multi-dimensional spectrum sensing are introduced. Spectrum sensing methodologies, energy efficiency consideration, resources scheduling, and self-management and learning mechanisms in cognitive radio networks are also discussed. The entailed challenges of CR RF front-end architectures are looked into. The synthesis and design performanc...
متن کاملArchitecture and design of a reconfigurable RF sampling receiver for multistandard applications
The fast development of wireless communication systems requires more flexible and cost effective radio architectures. A long term goal is the software defined radio, where communication standards are chosen by reconfiguration of hardware. Direct analog to digital conversion of the radio frequency (RF) signal is still unrealistic at present time, due to the high requirements imposed on the analo...
متن کاملCharge-Domain Signal Processing of Direct RF Sampling Mixer with Discrete-Time Filters in Bluetooth and GSM Receivers
RF circuits for multi-GHz frequencies have recently migrated to low-cost digital deep-submicron CMOS processes. Unfortunately, this process environment, which is optimized only for digital logic and SRAM memory, is extremely unfriendly for conventional analog and RF designs. We present fundamental techniques recently developed that transform the RF and analog circuit design complexity to digita...
